December 17, 2010, will mark the 75th anniversary of the Douglas DC-3/Dakota. We are compiling information on this glorious airplane for a book to commemorate, honor, and pay tribute to the airplane that changed the world.

Our goal is to bring to the public’s attention the little known facts and experiences of those who were pilots, or flew in the DAK, anywhere in the world, and had life-altering experiences that could have only taken place with the beloved DC-3/Dakota. These can range from the airplane saving your life to more colorful and perhaps “less than legal” experiences. They may also include just why you love the airplane. No experience is out of bounds or off limits (unless the op is still classified).

If you would like to be a part of this once in a lifetime project, and perhaps the final tribute to the greatest airplane ever built, then we need you to share your stories and photos, both military and civilian.

If you would like to contribute, please email your stories and high-resolution photos to the address below. We know that many of you are not professional writers, but please do not worry about grammar and syntax. We will have an editor helping us to make your words as exciting as your actual experiences.

Because of space considerations, we can make no guarantee that we will publish an individual’s work. However, if we decide to publish your material, we will ask you to sign a release authorizing us to publish your stories and/or photos without monetary compensation. Instead, you will receive a byline under your stories and/or photographs, and you will have the satisfaction that you contributed to the legend of the DC-3/Dakota, that will continue long after we have all folded our wings.

If you would like to contribute, we will need you to let us know so we may allocate space for your input, as soon as possible. For uniformity, we are asking that your inputs be limited to a maximum of 2,500 words. We prefer hard copy photos but digital photos are acceptable if they are a minimum of 1200X1600 pixels at 300 dpi. If you are unsure of this requirement, send us the photos and we will scan them and return them within a week of receipt. The deadline for inputs is September 30, 2009. Because of time constraints, any input after that date cannot be accepted.

Thank you for your kind consideration of this project.

Sincerely yours,

  Henry M. Holden douglasdc3@optonline.net
